The Pandemic and I (7) – Mask life

Deadpool Minnie Mousemask VS Darth Vadermask!!

I have to wear a surgical face mask during my working day. Before the pandemic, a mask was something we only ever wore if there was an outbreak of seasonal flu, gastro, or coughs and colds, but they have now become standard work issue along with our uniforms.

A 10 hour shift wearing one of these is no fun, but after a while you kind of get used to breathing behind it. The psychological and science benefits of knowing it can help avoid transmission of our dear Covid-19 is welcome.

I thought it would be fun to take a look into my archives and see what non-healthcare mask images I have… you know, the ones that are fun, geeky, Halloween or movie-based…

I had a lot more mask images than I thought 🙂

E.T., and Dark Crystal masks by Don Post. Starlog. 1982.

Vic Door Creepers. Starburst N°109. 1987. UK.

Don Post masks. Starlog. 1980.

Cheetara mask. Thundercats N°77. 1988. UK.

Below: not a mask I know, but a helmet… this is pretty good protection all the same!

Judoon Sound FX helmet. Doctor Who Adventures. 2007. UK.

Below: Warning! Beware of American actors stealing surgical masks right from under your feet!

Spidey wouldn’t do that!

Spider-Man: Far From Home chirashi poster. 2019. Japan.

Jabba’s henchmen might!

Star Wars. Return of the Jedi masks by Don Post. US. 1983.

Below: oops! Wrong kind of mask…

M.A.S.K. France. Pif gadget 896. 1986.

Below: from the Star Wars Book of Masks, (Le Livres des Masques. Hachette Jeunesse. 1983. France).

Below: superheroes wear masks!

Heroes World masks. 1979. US.

Heroes World Spider-Man Ski Mask. 1981. US.

Warning: best not to use the below mask under any circumstances!!

USA. The Best of Starlog Vol 1. 1980.

That’s all for now, folks!

Thank you for avoiding facial-recognition with us 🙂

And now, back to the science…

  • If you are healthy, you only need to wear a mask if you are taking care of a person with suspected 2019-nCoV infection.
  • Wear a mask if you are coughing or sneezing.
  • Masks are effective only when used in combination with frequent hand-cleaning with alcohol-based hand rub or soap and water.
  • If you wear a mask, then you must know how to use it and dispose of it properly.

When and how to use masks

  1. Imagine having everyone ,due to the shortage of proper masks , wearing a Guy Fawkes or a Casa de papel (Dali) mask !!
Im very tempted to wear mine next time I have to go to tbe bank…it will be an interesting exchange😂

On a more serious note, a crucial point about masks is the part of the directives that instructs NOT to allow space between the mask and your face.
I know that air tight masks are extremely hard to find but take any measure you can to tightly fit your mask.
Stay safe my friend 👊(virtual fist bump).

    • Hi mate. Lol; can just imagine Guy Fawkes, Dali, and E.T. charging into the bank – or lining up at the supermarket while respecting the 1 metre distance 🙂
You’re right about the snug fit to keep a mask close to the face. You should also change it if it becomes soiled or moist as these can render it useless.
Who would have thought there would be worldwide conversations about masks in 2020!
Stay safe too and fist bump right back!

  2. Hi TVTA, Just a couple of fun fact – Stormtrooper masks are fitted with filters but only for smoke and debris not Virus or Toxins! Finn actually mentioned that in The Force Awakens when he and Rey are hiding in the smuggling hold of the Millennium Falcon. I had the Book of Masks (\English edition).
The second fact is about ET, did you know he (or rather his species) is actually Canon in the Star Wars universe? It’s true, in The Phantom Menace there is a scene of a Senate Meeting and all the politicians are in those floating platforms. Well if you look closely you will see three little characters that look like ET in one of the pods. The character is called Senator Grieblips and his two aides. His species is named Bodo Asogians and the reason he is in the film is due to….the mask you posted at the top of the page. In the film ET, he goes for a walk outside hidden under a sheet and all the local kids are Trick or Treating for Halloween….when all of a sudden one kid appears wearing a YODA mask and ET points to the Yoda kid and says ….”Home!” This establishes a link between our universe and Star Wars.
George Lucas asked Stephen Spielberg if he would make a reference to his new film Empire Strikes Back in ET and Spielberg said “Yeah OK, but you have to put ET in Star Wars!” And two decades later George kept his half of the bargain and put ET in Phantom Menace!
Stay safe and well my friend…….and may I ask where Stanley Ipkiss was in your post?

    • Thanks FT. I didn’t know about the Stormie helmet mask filters; but do know about the E.T. and Star Wars crossovers. Great stuff. As for Mr Ipkiss… I don’t think I have a single The Mask image in my archives come to think of it. Would have been a good add on to the post.
Hope you’re keeping well and safe.

      • Hi TVTA, No problem, I try and share the little bits of trivia I gather over the years. And I may have gained a new skill….Computer Repairman….I have somehow re-installed Windows and am now using my new laptop again….IT’S ALIVE (well for now, I’m being careful and keeping my fingers crossed) I lost my files but my computer now works. Hope your day is being kind to you too! Take care.
