May the 4th Be With You!

Greetings vintage mates! This is a big hello from a galaxy far, far away, as TVTA emerges from its hiatus to bring you a special Star Wars post and wish you a happy Star Wars Day and May The Fourth Be With You!

It has long been a tradition at TVTA to celebrate the 4th of May (the internationally-recognised Star Wars celebration day, and a play on the expression ‘May The Force Be With You’), and no evil Empire is going to stop me enjoying this year at TVTA, hiatus or not!

Recycling the Force

Alas, I don’t have enough space credits just yet to upgrade my plan to be able to present you with new Star Wars image delights (of which I have a-plenty), but be rest assured there is enough galactic goodness in my archives to help make this day a very special Star Wars Day indeed!

Believing the hype!

My good WP blogging mate and fellow Star Wars fan Julie over at Darkside Creative made an excellent post recently posing the question: How did you become a Star Wars fan?

For me, it all started with the toys before I even saw the first film, namely Kenner and Palitoy 3.75 inch action figures, along with the iconic Landspeeder vehicle and my prized toy back then – a Palitoy Battle-Damaged X-Wing Fighter complete with Luke X-Wing Pilot.

Later came a vintage Japanese Takara Transforming X-Wing Fighter and a 7 inch die cast Darth Vader complete with a Chewbacca bowcaster (was the Dark Lord of the Sith not content with only a lightsaber?).

Later still came an addictive collection of modern-era The Black Series 6 inch figures (of which a separate post will be demanded at some point).

So, as you may have already guessed, this year’s May The Fourth Be With You post is dedicated to Star Wars toys! No sushi. No chirashi. No comic books. Just wonderful vintage and modern toys!

  1. hEEYYYY TVTA thank you so much for mentioning me in this post 😀 I am absolutely in love with your collectibles! I never had star wars toys as a kid, my brother was mostly into tonka trucks and stuff like that. I was not really a doll type of kid I was outside a lot lol and now I am the opposite! I shudder to think how much value your figures hold now 🙂 Thank you again my friend 😀

      • You must have a nice collection of valuable figures and collectables. I don’t really collect to resell but one of my funko pop vinyls is worth over $700.00USD and it came as a huge shock to me when I randomly checked the value online so I imagine yours are worth a huge amount of money now 🙂

      • Hi Julie. Wow, that’s staggering for a Pop Vinyl! I had no idea they could fetch anything near that. My First 12 figures set plus their original display stand will fetch a tidy price now considering I paid only 100USD for it some years back, and all the accessories are 100% original. Now, if only I’d have snapped up a vinyl cape Jawa when they were reasonably priced – just to give it that extra bit of rarity. My Star Wars Japanese Takara collectables will always keep a healthy value as they are rare, complete, and original boxed. But you know, I’m so happy to have these few things I can’t imagine I’d sell them.

      • Oh I know I was shocked to find that out myself! I have others that are worth way more than I paid for them and I can only see them going up in value as they are all vaulted and therefore you can’t buy them any more. I do have a lot of limited edition pop vinyls too but I suspect those ones will eventually be remade you never can tell what Funko will do. There are some Funko pops worth a lot more than the one I have too. But like you I collect to keep at this point anyway. I am amassing a much bigger collection than I anticipated and I have actually run out of room lol. I will need to start putting some of my funkos into storage soon. I just want to keep them as they are in their brand new packaging untouched lol 🙂

  4. Excellent! Reminds me of all the Star Wars goodies I’ve had over the years… Star Wars goodies that I’ve lost due to a lack of care when I was wee, lack of care in moving them out of my parents’ with me when I left home (my parental unit threw them out as “you didn’t need them”) and a few newer toys that I just threw out when moving a number of years ago (including yon interactive Yoda). Still, at least I got to enjoy them for a while…

    • Thanks, J. You’re right, you got to enjoy them back in the day and that’s the precious memories right there. Like you, I either sold or lost most of my SW toys. But it’s been fun as an adult collector rediscovering some of them again.

  6. Hello Vintage Mate! Good to see you again so soon. What a great collection even if it makes me slightly sad thinking of the Kenner X-Wing I owned and lost (when my brother sold it!). There is actually a fun bit of trivia connected to the Black Series X-Wing pilot figure from The Force Awakens. You might not know but the character is named Ello Asty which a nod by JJ Abrams to The Beastie Boys’ “Hello Nasty”! Being a musician I thought you’d like that trivia!

    • Thanks FT. Yes, I had to break out of hiatus for this special day! 😎
      I’m surprised at how much vintage Star Wars I still have, seeing as I moved a lot of it on the past few years (at one point I had eight X-Wing Fighters from different foreign licences and films, and even wrote a collectable guide to them).
      Ello Asty, yes I knew that trivia nugget, and the Black Series figure of him is one of my faves. I just ordered a new BS6inch figure for Star Wars Day as a little treat – one I’ve been after a long while! Can’t wait to get him and snap some poses!
