View-Master / Matchbox Grand Prix Game

Greetings vintage mates. Check out fellow WP blogger Mike Pigott’s excellent die cast toys and models site. The following reblog ticks three boxes of some of my favourite toys: the View-Master, die cast cars, and board games 🙂

Mike Pigott's Diecast Toys & Models

Mike Pigott looks at a rare game that combines a board, a View-Master viewer and reels and four Matchbox Superfast cars.

Viewmaster Game BoardDuring the 1970s GAF, the manufacturer of View-Master, entered the toy market with a range of games incorporating 3D viewers and reels. One of these was a race game that had the novel idea of using Matchbox cars as playing pieces. What makes this product of interest is the fact that some of the cars included were exclusive to the set and were not available separately, resulting in them being among the rarest Matchbox models of all time.

Matchbox military vehicles

“M.K.” is the only artist I can see credited among these 9 superb French print adverts for Matchbox military vehicles from the 1970s. The artwork successfully captures the dynamics of land, sea and air combat as Matchbox explored the theme of war through their popular model kits and die cast lines like Sea-Kings, Battle-Kings and Sky-Busters.

Retro toys in Coventry part one: the Coventry Transport Museum

abCov TM flyer

This is part one of my two-parter featuring retro toys exhibited at the Coventry Transport Museum and the Herbert Art Gallery and Museum in the city of Coventry, West Midlands, UK.

You can see part two Here

I’ve always enoyed visiting the transport museum and was pleased to see it once again following its recent refurbishment. If you get chance to visit do so – you’ll see a fascinating display of British Midlands’ transport heritage as well as a current exhibition of classic tin and die cast toy vehicles such as Dinky, Corgi and Matchbox.
