Welcome to TVTA Sweden and Finland!

Superman N°12 1987. Cover by Arthur Adams and Dick Giordano. DC Sweden/Finland.

Greetings vintage mates! In my ongoing endeavour to gather a digital archive of international advertising, catalogues, posters and comic covers, The Vintage Toy Advertiser is pleased to post today some wonderful examples from Sweden and Finland. Välkommen!

Adding to an already impressive world map featuring France, UK, US, Denmark, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, Greece, Japan and Brazil… the following titles from the 1970s and 80s were aimed at a Finnish and Swedish readership, and feature Superman – (Stålmannen in Swedish), Batman – (Läderlappen), Dracula, Tarzan, The Incredible Hulk, Daredevil (Våghalsen), and Spider-Man (Spindelmannen).

Enjoy the scans! Or as they may say in Swedish, Njut av skanningarna!

Modern vs Vintage

I was wondering how to present these ten modern paperworks I recently scanned – and I thought let’s see if I can twin them up with vintage counterparts. A sort of new versus old. Shiny versus retro. It took me a while to go through my archives looking for suitable matchups – especially anything vintage I might have with Spider-woman on it! Ultimately it was a fun exercise involving adverts and comic covers. Here are the results…  (click pics to go bigger)

The Mighty World of Marvel: Incredible Hulk cover art

For me, one of the bonuses in collecting retro advertising is all the interesting and varied comics and magazines I get to flick through. When presented with new materials my first impulse is to train my eyes upon the adverts on offer. After this it’s the turn of whatever other delights are contained within: comic strips, articles, interviews, photos, puzzles, posters, catalogue inserts… and of course the cover itself.

So I was pretty blown away by these Hulk covers from UK’s The Mighty World Of Marvel dating between 1974 and 1978. Featured artists / inkers are Herb Trimpe, Sal Buscema, Pablo Marcos, Tom Palmer, Al Milgrom and Ernie Chan.
