Presenting: This year’s TVTA Halloween pumpkin…
“The Very Hungry Cater-pumpkin-pillar!”
The Very Hungry Caterpillar is a 1969 children’s picture book, designed, illustrated, and written by Eric Carle. The book features a very hungry caterpillar eating foodstuffs before pupating and emerging as a butterfly. It has won many children’s literature awards and major graphic design awards. Furthermore, it has sold upwards of 50 million copies worldwide, selling roughly a copy per thirty seconds since its publication.(Info from Wikipedia)
Problem is… the Very Hungry Caterpillar is just too cute for Halloween! Let’s monster it up right now, TVTA style!
TVTA pumpkin construction breakdown:
4 mini pumpkins; 6 conkers; papier mâché body segments and head; acrylic paint; artists pens; card; cocktail sticks; chopsticks; modelling wire.
Scale-wise, here is a pic of the construction next to my laptop on my six-seater dining table. As much as I tried I couldn’t get the construction to stand upright, so it was finally photographed laid flat.
Below is a gallery of TVTA’s previous Halloween creations.
- Pumpkin Panda Pink Skater!
- Med-Hed!
- Bug-eyes!
- Yoda!
- Chief Chirpa!
Happy Halloween vintage mates! 🎃🎃🎃
Your pumkin is gold! As always & so unpredictable. You would’ve made a great marketing person in a different life

Ah, glad you like it. Was a lot of fun to build, and I love the book. Good job I have a whole year to dream up my next creation.
Marketing person in past life, hm? I’m sure I have an ad for that somewhere 😁

Your version of the Very Hungry Caterpillar via the pumpkin route, is lots of fun. Also, learning about the book is new to me, so thank you!
Fun to see your previous pumpkin creations. xoxo

Lol, well I actually gasped when I saw it – think that’s a job well done! It all makes sense now, and yes, it does look suitably scary too. I shudder to think what this hungry caterpillar is going to munch through.
Congrats on another cool and totally left-field pumpkin creation. Happy Halloween!

Many thanks, Jacob. Really glad you enjoyed my little tribute to that hungry caterpillar! Was a lot of fun to make and very messy with all the papier mâché segments! Happy Halloween to you too my friend 🎃

Very good making the hungry caterpillar look scary. Happy Halloween. Question: Are some French people hostile at the notion that an American holiday has been foistered on them? Some in Britain feel that way.

Many thanks, Metalman. That’s a great question worthy of 500 vintage points!
When I first came to France back in 2011, Halloween seemed to be viewed as a bit ‘meh’ here. However, since the past five years it’s become huge, with many shops selling costumes and accessories, and bars and restaurants making cool displays.
I was working last night up to seven-thirty, and there were three of my colleagues off to fancy-dress Halloween balls when their shift finished. As I was cycling home to get ready for my Halloween pizza and movie, I lost count of how many children I saw dressed up, adults too, and even a gang of skateboarders dressed as skeletons – honestly it was like when I was a kid watching all those American movies when on Halloween everyone was out and about in costume, so cool to see! Plus, later, you could hear live music and fireworks going off (the French love their fireworks, so any excuse lol).
There’s a Wild West theme park near to where I live, and each October school holiday they transform it into a Halloween-fest for two weeks, with cowboy and indian zombies and ghosts. Here’s the pics from when I went a few years ago: https://thevintagetoyadvertiser.org/2017/11/01/halloween-countdown-1/
So, my answer is (at least here in the south-east of France), no, the French seem absolutely delighted that an American holiday has been foistered on them, and totally get into the spirit of it! For me it’s brilliant to see it enjoyed here at last, as I’m a big Halloween fan 🎃

Happy Halloween, Ford!🎃
That was some transformation, worthy of the season.
And it was about time we got rid of the Covid inspired themes!

Hellooooooooo TVTA! Happy Halloween! I can’t imagine Mr Carle ever envisaged his cute caterpillar turning into a TVTA creative classic!
Regards your previous Halloween efforts, Med-Hed was quite disturbing (probably due to the medical-like staple/sutures etc) but for some reason I felt quite comfortable seeing Yoda and Chief Chirpa (I wonder why?)
Anyhoooooooooooo have a great Halloween and I’ll go look for some Force Ghosts !

Many thanks FT. I’m glad you like my Very Hungry Caterpillar tribute.
Yoda and Chief Chirpa were fun and a good challenge to make a few years back.
Hope you had a great Halloween too! 🎃

Hello TVTA, I had a very quiet Halloween to be honest. As I live in a high rise tower with an intercom controlled door access I don’t get as many callers to my front door.
