From très élégant to trop cool! 1965-1968 Fashion and Style!
To answer my own question, I’ll say first that I’m a fan of the 1920s look, I love too the rebel flair of the 1950s, the glam and glitz of the 1970s, and the new wave punk attitude of the 1980s… but it’s decade numéro 1960s which takes my vote as favourite.
We could agree that fashion is often influenced by that which has preceded it; and in the images I’ve scanned below it’s interesting to see how some of the styles have a definite 1920s look, and there is also that natural crossover or bleed from the 1950s influence. But we could also agree that the sixties saw a genuine birth of new ideas which not only exploded onto the scene but perhaps defined in the first place exactly what a scene should look like. The style back then – whether it was the clothes you wore or the way you cut your hair, or the jewellery you wore, seemed to marry effortlessly into the music and films and the characters which inhabited the sixties landscape. Cool? Swinging? Fab? I think so.
Join me, as TVTA points a nostalgic lens on just some of the fashions, style and brands which appeared in this decade, via the pages of French publications Marie France (from 1965), and Elle (from 1968).

I would have to say either the 1920s or the 80s would be where I would peak. Such an interesting read!

Many thanks Jessi! I would agree with you that the 1920s and 80s were just brilliant for their designs and style.

Although the counterculture influenced in the 60s this was the beginning, the peak of extravagance was reached in the 80s where more artistic elements were introduced as an example we see Versace.

I like how the 80s embraced that ‘artistic’ element you mention. Flamboyant and romantic too. A good music example – the costumes and makeup of Adam and the Ants.

Wonderful photos. But the posing of that male model ain’t groovy at all …

Lol, and it was the only male-appeal advert across the entire two magazines, apart from the Brut aftershave!

Pingback: If you had to choose a favourite decade for fashion and style, which would you choose? – Amazing
I fancy hanging out on the fringes of the literary crowd in the fashions of 1920s Paris.

Hiya Chris. Yes! I too would go to Paris and paint and write (and probably get a bit drunk, knowing me). Was just saying to Spira that the 1920s was truly a decade of style and fashion. Good choice!

What a collection!
Well, never been a student of fashion but I guess I would go with the ’20s.

Hiya mate, thanks! I was looking through some of my older posts with fashions and ads from the 1920s, and it was indeed a decade of style and glamour, one I would happily time travel to if I can get the TVTA time machine up and running again!

I think I’d go with the 60s too – those hairdos, the miniskirts and the boots, just fab! Men seemed to be embracing beards and taches again too and really letting them grow, although I feel like that took off in the next decade. Classy pictures here. It’s funny to think that my grandparents (born in the 20s) would probably have thought they looked scruffy!

Agree, I think the beards and long hair took off in the 70s proper. Funny to think that the generations before the 60s might have perceived the 60s as scruffy or too mod… when in fact the 60s decade was mostly very smartly dressed.

Yeah – Sixties ALMOST does it for me … but ’70s win through. The sheer variance from hippie to rock chic, to cheesecloth country, through Glam to Disco to Punk then New Wave fashions – each trying to ‘out – outrage’the other. Loved it! 🙂

For all what you said about the 70s… love it! If I had to pinpoint one thing about that decade I would say David Bowie, even though he spanned many more decades. What a superstar!
