TVTA is pleased to present an Australian-heavy feature of classic 1980s artists and bands. The adverts were featured in DC superhero comics such as Superman, Supergirl, Wonder Woman and Super Powers, and were published by The Federal Publishing Company Proprietary Limited which was granted permission by DC to reprint and publish their titles under the name Federal Comics to Australian readers. To see some examples of the actual comics go to TVTA’s post here
For now, let’s get into the groove…

Do You Really Want To Shave Me?
Hmm, I never knew Boy George had a goatee-beard in 1984 (neither did he I reckon!). A previous owner of the comic book in which this Culture Club advert appeared found it necessary to draw a beard not once but twice on the image of George. A quick image search of Boy George reveals that in recent years he has indeed sported a beard… so maybe our cheeky little comic book beard-doodler was seeing into the future?

Maybe George would go on to be inspired by Mr. T? Do you remember when Boy George was briefly a member of the A-Team? He was!

Moving on… we have singular sensation Prince! Followed by some Rock Video and Rock Postcards!

Moving on from Australia but staying in the same decade, we present now some 1980s adverts from the Netherlands and the UK.

As always, thanks for looking 🙂
Sizzle your sences – in full color! Marvelous 🙂

Hi TVTA, I saw the episode of the A-Team with Boy George when it first aired in the UK back in the day (80’s) and can recall he didn’t have a beard in that show! But talking of “for-seeing the future”…did the editorial staff at Rock Stars Scrapbook know something about Michael Jackson or was the positioning of the text just unfortunate to put Scandal above his name?

Great images – and some of those “Top Teen Hunks” like John Stamos & Rob Lowe still look pretty similar today!

Thanks Geoff. Yes you’re right, they’ve hardly changed. Must have been something good in the 80s water back then!

I would have drawn a beard on Boy George too!

Lol. I wouldn’t have. I enjoyed the first two Culture Club singles, plus my mum had the album and played it non stop. I was probably too busy drawing beards and funny glasses on a certain UK PM at the time 😁

Don’t blame you.

Only seems like yesterday… but how could I have missed Boy George on the A-Team??

It does, Chris. I avidly watched the first few seasons of The A-Team but lost interest in the last couple, hence I too missed Boy George’s appearance.
