The magazine features Meccano related news items, reports on aviation, space exploration, sports, science, competitions, a Dinky Toys Club Journal page, and some wonderful 1950s toy ads.

Staying in a Meccano mood…
I helped my youngest son build a mini Meccano aeroplane over the weekend. Here are some pics from start to finish. For a toy so tiny and fiddly to put together, it looks pretty cool when all is done, with rolling wheels and a propeller that can turn.

Huh! All news to me, except for Dinky Toys, although I never had any.
It’s quite amazing how many toys have been made over the years.
What’s the earliest toys you have posted?

Good question. Thanks! For toy ads – the earliest printed ones I have are the ones in this post, as I tend to focus more on 70s, 80s and 90s toys.
For non-toy ads – my earliest are my collection of hat ads from the 1920s and 30s. Those are just a delight!

Thanks Wibi. I bet, like many building hobbies, Meccano could be addictive, especially as there seemed to be an endless amount of sets produced.

My oldest print ads are a Jean Peille hat ad from 1925, and a Ballot automobile ad from the same year. I was really lucky once in getting hold of a 1920s to 1950s job lot of adverts from various French periodicals. It was such a wonderful haul of amazing old images, mostly hats but other things too … you can see the full lot here: https://thevintagetoyadvertiser.org/2018/03/14/vintage-hats/

Yes, Dinky was a top quality toy car maker back then. I love their 50s and 60s ads as many were drawn by artists, giving the models a distinct charm.
