Godzilla is a gigantic prehistoric sea creature, awakened by nuclear radiation to emerge from the ocean and wreak havoc on Earth. Classified as a kaiju – a Japanese word that refers to the genre of films featuring such giant monsters, Godzilla first appeared as a cinema release in 1954 in Ishirō Honda’s film Godzilla. Since then, the King of the Monsters has appeared in a multitude of films, TV shows, video games, comics, and books. Hi TVTA, I didn’t realise there were so many recent adaptations of Godzilla. You mentioned early sci-fi, well I remember one film I’ll never forget and the title was “IT-The thing from space” The reason I’ll always remember it was that humans had built a rocket and landed on the moon then when they were attacked by an alien being they defended themselves using .45 calibre automatic pistols! No laser guns or blasters – you could even hear bullet ricochet sound fx. Now that’s a classic!

Hi FT. Is that the film “IT! The Terror From Beyond Space” (1958)? Haven’t seen it myself but it’s reputed to have inspired the film Alien. I saw a clip and they have hand guns in it not lasers as you said.

It might be, it was a long time ago when I saw it. Though I’m fairly certain it had the tag “the thing from space” as seeing spacemen using Colt 45 pistols was so funny it stuck in my mind.

Godzilla’s a brilliant and enduring 50s icon, and I know you love this era so much. Do you know the film The Blob with Steve McQueen? I must have watched that so many times as a kid and need to see it again. One 50s film I did watch again recently was The Creature From the Black Lagoon and I loved it. The 50s was quite an era for monsters and sci-fi!
Retrodee can you help me please with a little chapter I’m writing? It’s the summer of 1959, Seattle, and I need four famous music artists (preferably one who is female) who would have been typically played on an American radio station at that exact time. I need lively songs not ballads, the type that would make you want to immediately kick off your shoes and dance in your bedroom. I could research online but wanted to ask someone who really cares! Any help greatly and muchly appreciated 🙂
