Big thanks to fellow WP blogger Virtuanaut for sharing the image scans from the Starriors Marvel mini-comics series. To view the complete series be sure to visit Virtuanaut’s site.
Starriors was a short-lived line of toy robots made by Tomy in 1984 and 1985. The figures were released with Marvel mini-comics (6 comics in total). Marvel also published a 4-issue comic book series. Some of the Starriors toys were later altered and re-branded for European markets as R.A.T.S (Robot Anti-Terror Squad).

These are great ads! Never heard of Starriors before, they look really good. They look a bit like Zoids.

Good eye, Paul. I just read that they originated from Tomy’s earlier Zoids line of mechanical creatures. There was even a Zoid character deliberately held back from the line and saved for Starriors.

Oh, great! I didn’t know that, but soon as I saw the ads they reminded me of Zoids. Interesting to hear how some a Zoid was held back and used for Starriors instead.

Hi TVTA, I vaguely remember these TOMY toys (Ripsaw seems familiar) but what amazes me is how closely they resemble the Hasbro Transformers. The Pterodactyl shaped droid looks like the audio cassette robots that came with Soundwave the Decepticon that transformed into a cassette player device.

Hi FT. Yes, there are some similarities to Transformers. From additional reading Starriors seem to have originated from Tomy’s earlier Zoids line which were made up of mechanical creatures, usually dinosaurs.

Hi again, I was going to say they looked a little bit like Zoids, I think one was galled Grimlock? (The T-Rex) but the likeness to the Transformers I mentioned struck me first.

These look kind of cool, but I’ve never heard of Starriors or R.A.T.S. before today.

I’d heard of both lines but knew nothing about them, nor had I seen any ads until Virtuanaut posted the comic book scans. I’ve just started reading the stories and they’re pretty good so far.
