G.I. Joe was first marketed by Hasbro in 1964 as a 12 inch (30 cm) scale posable action figure, then later again in 1982 as a 3.75 inch (9.5 cm) scale figure. In the UK the toy was sold by the Palitoy company as ‘Action Man’ (12 inch) and ‘Action Force’ (3.75 inch).

The military uniforms and weapons were appealing as a young boy. Later it became a little less violent with more sports and adventure themes added. One of my favourites was the astronaut and space sets.

Hi TVTA, yes I too had a few Joes (well Action Man as I’m in the UK). I had a few vehicles such as the Arctic Patrol Scout Car and the Jeep/trailer combo (however my jeep didn’t have the motor sound FX). I spent many hours looking at all the accessory packs on the yellow cards!

Hi FT. I had the jeep and trailer, the lorry with removable canopy, an armoured scout vehicle, and the German motorbike and sidecar. I think my brother had the tank and helicopter, though it could have been one of our mates on our estate as we played Action Man outside together. Great toys.

Hi, yes my elder brother had the Scorpion Recon tank and Supply Truck. I eventually got the bike and sidecar from a garage sale. We also had the artillery cannon which fired projectiles – but that thing was lethal as it could also fire HB Pencils. Not very safe but they were fantastic toys.

I had 70’s GI Joes. None from the 60’s. As a kid, I would’ve taken any as I loved my Joes. Especially when they would become destructive and beat up ken to get to barbie.

I too had the 70s ones. Brilliant vehicles and such a great toy. Good fun combining them with other figures like Steve Austin, Evel Knievel and Barbie when my cousins came round to play.
