In a new entry at The Vintage Toy Advertiser, we take a look at 1986’s space-western toy line BraveStarr by Mattel. The toys accompanied the Filmation animation series of the same name which aired between 1987 and 1988. Filmation had previously been responsible for He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, She-Ra: Princess of Power, Shazam! and Filmation’s Ghostbusters. BraveStarr would prove to be the studio’s final animation series output.

Set in the 23rd century on a planet called New Texas, BraveStarr mixes the genres of science fiction and wild west to pitch heroes against villains. The lead hero is Marshal BraveStarr – a Native American with superhuman spirit-animal powers, as well as a small arsenal of futuristic weaponry at his disposal. Lead villain is Tex Hex – who was originally a villain character in the development of Filmation’s Ghostbusters series. Tex Hex was removed from the show so that the studio could base the upcoming BraveStarr series around his character.

Great show, I just got my son to start watching and he loves it. I actually liked BraveStarr better than He-Man when I was a kid. I’ve looked a little into the toys but they’re too expensive for me.

I’m curious to see the series, it sounds brilliant, and cool that you got your son into it š I’m not surprised the toys are a bit pricey… I read they were around 8 inches tall and came with lots of accessories. Imagine the size of the vehicles and that play set too!

If I might make a suggestion, try the DVD set called The Best of Bravestarr. It has the movie that launched the series along with the episodes that are considered the best of the bunch.

Wow! This toy is totally new to me. Looks like fun, and reminds me of when I wanted to be a Cowgirl. Although, I imagined myself as a regular Cowgirl, not a space one. I had the BEST outfit of anyone, the whitest horse and a silver lasso. xx

Regular cowgirls and space cowgirls are both fine by me, and I guess just about any other type of cowgirl Jessie from the Toy Story 2 and 3 films is a particular favourite š
