Pop Culture Advertising 1997 – 2018

TVTA puts aside its usual fare of vintage adverts for a moment to focus on some younger ads which embrace the pop culture of their older generations. We begin in our current year 2018 with an advert for a Tintin watch based on the character’s adventure Explorers on the Moon which was first published in Tintin magazine on 30 March 1950.

Hi TVTA. Cool! Star Wars and WWe in one post. I have a Micro Machines C3PO playset which is Threepio’s head. It opens up (like a clamshell) to reveal the Star Wars Cantina inside. It even has a sliding mechanism so the Imperials can burst through the doorway. But I wish I had those WWe busts, they are nice. Did I mention I designed a lightsaber for Johnny Jeter of the WWe Spirit Squad? I used to chat with him on a forum and got to send him my design!

Hi FT. Cool, you should send me the link to that lightsaber design. I nearly bought one of those Micro-machines playset heads a few years back to go in the toy collection – looks like they have a lot of playability and function.

Hi TVTA, the C3PO set is quite neat (though mine is slightly damaged – the hinge has snapped and is second hand). The amount of detail they cram in the sets is astounding.
Wrestling hilts I have a few so here are the links to “Spirit Seeker Lightsaber” for Mr Jeter and a collection of over 20 other WWe and WCW saber designs.

Really enjoyed these – the Tintin watch and film festival posters are favourites. But it’s the WWE busts have really caught my eye, especially Kane. A few years earlier and I’d have been all over those!
