I was wondering how to present these ten modern paperworks I recently scanned – and I thought let’s see if I can twin them up with vintage counterparts. A sort of new versus old. Shiny versus retro. It took me a while to go through my archives looking for suitable matchups – especially anything vintage I might have with Spider-woman on it! Ultimately it was a fun exercise involving adverts and comic covers. Here are the results… (click pics to go bigger)
Spider-woman. 2008 vs 1980.
Hulk. 2008 vs 1977.
Superman. 2013 vs 1979
Wrestling. 2008 vs 1989
G.I. Joe. 2009 vs 1988
2000 AD. 2017 vs 1988
Doctor Who. 2013 vs 1979
Playmobil. 2014 vs 1978
Lego. 2014 vs 1978
Iron Man. 2014 vs 1978
Thanks for looking 🙂
Love these comparisons! The Superman merchandise ad is great!

You did it again!
I also think that someone more qualified than me in sociology could easily extract hints of stereotypes of each era.
Brilliant.

Thanks! Was a lot of fun putting this together and seeing the differences. You’re right, the Spider-man and Hulk weeklies and also The Mighty World of Marvels were all good reads, and a good source of ads too 🙂

Oh yes, Mighty World of Marvel was a awesome as well. That title featured so many great characters. I enjoyed it when Dracula Lives was in that one as well. So many awesome Adds in these classic comics 🙂

What a fun idea for a post! I enjoyed the whole thing but that G.I. Joe ad from 1988? Whoa – that was an INSTANT flashback! Ahh, I loved it! I remember seeing that thing everywhere!

Thanks! The two G. I. Joe’s are nice aren’t they. Good to see how certain lines of toys continue across the years.

It’s also crazy to see what an instant nostalgic time warp those ads were! It immediately took me back to my youth. And you’re right, it’s kind of cool to see how some of these iconic lines have continued through the years. It lets generations have this sort of flashback then :).
