Some great retro ads just in to compliment two of TVTA’s favourite categories. You can see the original Saturday Morning TV section here and Superhero Hostess Twinkies, Cup Cakes and Fruit Pies here
For now, Here are the newbies. Thanks for looking.
NBC Saturday Morning TV featuring Spider-Man, the Smurfs, Mr.T, Alvin & The Chipmunks, and other cartoon favourites.
CBS Saturday Morning TV featuring Sylvester and Tweety, Bugs Bunny, Tarzan and others.
Hostess Fruit Pies featuring Batman.
Hostess Fruit Pies featuring Batman.
Hostess Cup Cakes featuring Superman.
Hostess Fruit Pies featuring Superman.
Hostess Cup Cakes featuring Wonder Woman.
Hostess Cup Cakes featuring Red Tornado.
I’ve always liked the Hostess ads. The brief plot in some of them could get quite strange. I always thought it was funny that the heroes would rarely, if ever, be seen eating the product.
The Saturday morning cartoon ads bring back many memories… especially the Shazam! Isis Hour.

Thanks, and good point! That never occurred to me about the superheroes not eating the product. Out of the 26 Hostess ads I have there is just one (Hulk tucking into a cup cake lol). The description of the product (“Fudgy icing! Deep, dark, delicious choclaty cake!” etc) seems to be mostly made by bystanders, the villain or rescued kids – the hero standing there smiling over them. Such great ads.

Wonderful adverts, remember seeing lots of these in comics, especially the batman / fruit pie add! The NBC Saturday Morning TV with Spider-Man, the Smurfs, Mr.T, Alvin & The Chipmunks, and more, is also brilliant. Wish they still did adds like this, much more fun 🙂

Cheers Paul. I agree, the old-school hand drawn ads are much more fun. I guess as new technology took over it was cheaper and faster to ditch this style. I imagine the Hostess ads would have taken a long time to complete, and were expensive if having to use an artist, writer, inker and letterer as in the comic strips. Thanks for your comment and have a great weekend! 🙂
